Isaac William Smith was a member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1846. He was admitted to the bar in 1850 and practiced in Manchester, New Hampshire. In 1877, he was appointed an associate justice in the New Hampshire Supreme Judicial Court. He was named a trustee of Dartmouth College in 1885 and held that post until his death. Chase was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1860. He was Chandler Instructor of Municipal Law at Dartmouth College from 1874 to 1879 and treasurer of the college from 1875 to 1890.
